"Come On In"
The beautiful improvements to our community room and our narthex are not just for us! St. Lukes opens it's doors to community groups looking for a place to meet. The charge is minimal.
This allows us both to serve and to become better known by those in our community.
Do you know of a group that might be looking for a home? Clubs, organizations, clubs and private parties are welcome.
Perhaps you have a skill, talent or passion such as sewing, writing, music or crafts that you would like to form a group around, using the church building. Zumba is already meeting. A martial arts and a music "jam" are in the planning stages.
Let Wanda Harper or Brian Bailey know if you have an idea of who we might invite. We'll be glad to contact them and fill them in on the details.

ON REARRANGING OUR RESOLUTIONS
As we begin a new year we hear much of resolutions and plans. People talk of changes they will implement, new ventures they will launch, habits they wish to overcome.
In the midst of such, it's good to remember the basic call of Jesus to small acts of faithfulness as the path to greatness." He taught it in many ways. In stories of yeast and salt and seeds - each tiny, but producing major growth. He taught it by his life - in a ministry of three years, calling only 12 disciples and selecting only three of these to whom he paid particular attention. He taught it in his praise for the widow with her gift of a penny and the cold cup of water, given in His name. And he taught it directly when he told those disciples, "If you are faithful in little, I will make you ruler of much."
In truth, it is the little things that change history and lives: Small gifts given faithfully. Habits of spirituality forged by daily repletion. Repeated acts of kindness that build a bridge of friendship and witness.
Perhaps we should re-arrange our resolutions. Instead of thinking of the big changes, perhaps we should think of a couple little, but faithful changes we will make this year. What will it be for you? Giving a few extra dollars per week? Focusing on one person and providing random acts of kindness? Memorizing a single Bible verse each month or rising 10 minutes earlier each day to greet the Lord? Writing one card or making one phone call to encourage another on a regular basis? What little seed will you plant? What is your portion of yeast or pinch of salt that will, because of faithfulness, make all the difference?
The message is certainly counter cultural. Our culture applauds the flashy, the powerful and the large. "Mega" and "Ultra" are the prefixes most used to sell everything from food to soap to movie stars. And yet, let us never forget the lessons and the example of the King of Kings, whose life's symbols are the seeming insignificance of a manger and the austerity of a cross, but whose impact will reign for ever and ever. O come, let us adore Him!
I love you.

THANK YOU GREETERS!
This month I want to share a letter from one of our own....about our WONDERFUL greeters! Maybe next month we'll be reading about you.
Hey Kim, I wanted to write a quick note of thanks to all the people serving the church as greeters. You see, when I visited the church about 3-4 years ago I wasn't sure what to expect. I had never been to an Anglican church before and had only come to the church because a few friends of mine were already attending. Even on my first visit, there were already things I appreciated about St. Luke's. Chiefly among those things, however, was the hospitality and graciousness I received from Trish Silcox and Carol Burch.
Looking back now, I realize they are the reason I came back. Their out-going graciousness and interest in a perfect stranger were crucial glances in to the St. Luke's community. Because of the encounters I had with them, I knew St. Luke's was place I could come to worship. Since then, my friends have continued on, and I've found myself here with St. Luke's as my primary church home.
I noticed some that same hospitality and invitation now coming from others. Thank you, Greeters for being a window for others to see this as home too. |

Teen Fellowship
The past month and half has been an exciting time for everyone involved in St. Luke's Teen Fellowship. As we ended last semester, we were able to look back on a semester of growth in Community, knowledge about God's mission, and the critical/intellectual study of the Bible. We met often to study God's word together, and even more, to grow in relationships. We shared meals, and we were even able to go as a group to a number of musical concerts that some of the students were involved in!
This semester holds much to be charged about as well. We are beginning to brave the frontier of building and discovering a relationship with God. We will practice corporate prayer, personal times with the Lord, praise, and bible study. Let us look toward this next semester with much anticipation as a semester that is going to be explosive in young people's lives.
Please continue to pray for St. Luke's Teen Fellowship: that we would continue to grow in community, our relationship with God, and sharing God's love and kindness with others.

Compassion Ministries
One of the values we hold at St. Lukes is to be "Christ with a skin face," that is to show his love in tangible, practical ways. The last few months have provided an opportunity to put this into practice:
Christmas gifts for kids
Over Christmas your donations made it possible to help three families who had no gifts for their children. A total of 9 children had smiles on Christmas morning because of your generosity.
Food Pantry
We continue to help those in need of food. Several times a month we get requests from those who have needs. Your faithfulness helped 19 families last year - a total of more than 50 people. A couple of cans a week, left in the basket in the narthex as an offering makes the message of God's love known and felt.
A Ticket Home
During this season your gifts also helped a young man who was homeless and attending St. Luke's become reunited with his family by purchasing a bus ticket to Texas.
Jesus said, "In as much as you've done it unto the least of these . . . you have done it for me." |
"St. Luke's Cares"

St Luke's Cares, our new pastoral care ministry is off and running in it's first pilot month. In case you haven't heard, this is a way of organizing and strengthening our caring for family and friends in our St. Luke's Community. Much more than just supplying a meal or a ride these tangible expressions of love can make a huge difference in people's lives and give a witness to those outside as well.
We still need people who are interested in helping with this ministry. The first step is to simply let the cordinators of SLC- Janice Young (228-6452) or Brenda Poulos (933-0773) - know of your willingness. When an opportunity to minister by bringing a meal or helping with a task arises, those on the list will be notified with a link to the "CareCalendar" which allows them to sign up for those things they want to do. Sign up is easy, efficent and private.
If you are in need of help you can also request it by contacting the Janice and Brenda.
May it be said of us, as it was of those first Christ followers, "Look how the love one another!" |
